More

He's(Max) getting bolder now and just using the word "stupid" without changing it. He must know it's a button-pusher for us and boy is it.

One other expression is "shocks" and he uses it in a ahh shucks sort of way. We'd be fine with shucks. . . It's actually hard to not laugh when he says it. Reminds me of a cross between Gomer Pile and Jethro Klampet. . .

Any opinions on "stupid" therapy? What's worked/not worked for you?

I went to my trusted source - a kindergarden teacher. She has wonderful, almost grown children. Her suggestion "Our family has a tradition and our family doesn't say that word." Now you have to come up with suggestions for other words that would take the place of "stupid" and ask him to use that instead. Next time (many, many next times) say "Our family has a tradition . . . etc) and repeate the process reminding him what words he can use in place of "stupid." She's got great kids! And they are VERY family oriented.
When you need help with lies and fibs, she also has a great suggestion - let me know when it's time and I'll ask her again what her words are. :-)
